So a few years ago, I was thinking about what transpired to make me the person I am today, and how things work to open your eyes to the people you meet, and eventually to the person who matters the most to you. I started thinking back to the events that led to me meeting my wife, and realized that it goes back quite a ways, and includes events in my life that I never would have imagined would lead to me meeting my wife.

This is the story of those events, and it’s a long one, so I’m breaking it up into several installments.

It begins in the first grade (I know, right? first grade!).

I was in the first grade and I had been doing very well with my studies (studies? like what, drawing horseys?), and was doing so well, that they decided to move me up a grade, right in the middle of the year. So I guess the story also begins in the second grade. Anywho… on with the story…

My family (consisting of me, my mom, and my little brother), moved from an apartment in Salt Lake City, to a house in Magna when I was in the third grade (but I thought you said this story begins in the first grade? Well, it does, and we’ll get to that in a moment.) We had moved into a small neighborhood, with a few kids, but not many.

One day, shortly after moving, I was riding my bike down the street, and there were some kids about my age throwing a tennis ball back and forth across the street. Naturally, kids being kids, and boys being more so, they threw the ball at me. I, of course, didn’t really like this, and thought that these kids were being mean to me, and went home. Later on (possibly that same day, I don’t remember), I met these kids again, and not sure what exactly happened, but contrary to what you might think, we hit it off very well. One of the kids in particular (Angel), became one of my best friends all throughout the remainder of elementary, jr. high (middle school, for those not familiar), and high school.

Angel, and his brother Jose, were two of the three kids that threw the tennis ball at me, and the three of us were pretty much inseparable from that point on. Jose was a couple years older than we were (Angel and I were in the same grade, and this is why skipping a grade in early elementary is important to the story, as I don’t think they would have been as important in my life if we hadn’t been in the same grade), but we were always together, all the time.

Fast forward about 6–7 years, the three of us were still inseparable, but we were older now, and all of our fun activities went from playing in the street, or playing Nintendo, to doing things at night. Because, for some reason, things that you do as a teenager, even if they don’t require darkness, seem so much more fun at night.

We always went to various teenage nighttime events together. They took my to my first dance club (pretty much snuck me in, because I was only 15 at the time (remember, even though we are in the same grade, I was a year younger than Angel)), which was pretty amazing. We went on several runs to various places that young boys and girls go to together, like Goblin Valley (not the real Goblin Valley, but the one on 9th south.), and to the top of the world, and ice blocking in Sugarhouse park (and yes, we did have girls with us at the time, it wasn’t just a group of guys).

It was during this period that I got introduced to techno music. And if you know me, then you know I love techno music.

We (Angel, Jose, and I) were going to pick up some girls, and we were listening to some music in the car. I was about 14 or 15 at the time, and I’m pretty sure the song that came on was Jump by The Movement. I loved it. I asked Jose what type of music that was, and he told me it was techno.

I’m not sure when it was, but it was probably the next day, I ran off to the music store, and grabbed any CD in the store that had the word ‘techno’ on the cover (which amounted to about 3 CDs, because at the time—1992 or so—techno was still very new, and unbeknownst to me, very underground). I immediately became entranced by the music, and have loved it ever since. I would listen to it during school… in the car… at home… basically everywhere.

And that is where I’ll stop this installment of the story, and leave you with a blast from the past…

and if you’re wondering… my second love is techno. My tastes have been refined somewhat, for as I go back and listen to some of the stuff I bought back then—the stuff that got me so entranced with the genre—I sometimes wonder what I was thinking. Because even though I loved it at the time, and it therefore still has a place in my heart, it really wasn’t that good. But I still love techno.

so i went to my first college football game ever on saturday night and it was awesome !

first off, it was the last game in an undefeated season for the utes and it was against our rivals: BYU. the game started off kinda slow and i was a little bit worried for the first quarter, the cougars (BYU) were keeping up and had the score tied just before the end of the half (14-14), then we came back after an interception by the cougars that almost got them a touchdown, and intercepted thier ball and brought it back 92 yards for a touchdown. it was the best play of the night. when the game was over the score was 52-21 Utah and the crowd stormed the field. it was an amazing sight, even from outside the stadium where we were waiting to beat the crowd but still watch the field rush. if you’ve never seen one, it’s like red water rushing onto the field… but faster.

view the play by play

the whole game was an experience, even during the game, the drum section of the band would play little ‘songs’ that were pretty cool, and when the cougars made a touchdown their band would play but our drum section would play something else really loud trying to mess them up, it was pretty funny.

after the game, we went home, got some food, and then i headed over to a friends house for a LAN party that lasted until about 5:30 in the morning. my brother also came to the party, and i’m assuming it was his first, and i think he had a good time, he actually surprized me a little when he started doing good.

anywho… if you ever get a chance to go to a college football game, especially on rivalry week… go. it’s fun.

but even though i waited in line for tickets for like 10 hours, our seats were still pretty shitty, maybe next time i’ll just buy them…

its crazy how everything moves so fast. i thought i was gonna start posting in this blog more often, and here it is already a week and a bit after my last post. crazy.

so i stayed out all night a couple nights ago waiting for tickets to the BYU vs. Utah game that’s coming up this weekend. i thought it was gonna be cold and boring and long, but it actually turned out to be a really fun night. we hung out and watched movies, played poker, played old skool nintendo, contra, tennis, tecmo bowl, had a bbq and just basically hung out and messed around all night. made the night go by pretty fast and it wasn’t nearly as cold as i thought it was gonna be, although i did have three layers on…

the game is on this coming saturday (nov. 20th) and will be broadcast on ESPN2 and we (Utah) are gonna whoop some holy ass !!

so anywho…

have a good day !

i just can’t wrap my brain around particle physics, and my thermodynamics teacher is whacked in the head, i swear. i even went to a study group for particle physics and still don’t understand it. it sucks. and it’s kinda lame because if it were really “particle physics” instead of “really weird math”, i’d probably understand it. but as it’s the latter, i don’t. and the teacher throws up these really odd looking equations on the board and then proclaims that “obviously, this must be true”, and i’m thinking, “who is this obvious to, besides you? i don’t even understand what you wrote down.”

stupid math notations.

but it’s all good, cuz this saturday night, i’m throwin down some phatty tracks at my house, chillin with some good friends, and monitoring my drinking, because i’d like to stay awake for this one. =)

so school started again, that break was either not long enough or too long, i’m not sure which, but it definitely wasn’t time to go back to school. as much as i love school, it’s still poopy to have to wake up that early just to fall back asleep in class. or have there not even be a class, which was the case yesterday. i woke my ass up at 7:30 to get to my class at 9:10, but then, after i got there, i sat there for like 20 minutes out in the hall, waiting for somebody, anybody, but nobody showed up, no teacher, no students, nobody. stupid first day labs.

my next class was at 2:00, so i went to work, then back to school for an hour, yep, that’s it, 1 hour. went home and sat around, or rather drove around, hunting down some money so i could buy me and my girl a couple of iPod’s (which are dope as hell by the way), then i had to go back to school at 7:15 for a night class, which is going to suck, but at least the class will be worth going to.

so i got home from that class, loaded some songs onto my iPod for today (gotta love firewire, 800 songs in about 5-10 min), then went to bed, but couldn’t sleep, and after i finally got to sleep, the dumb dog woke me up at like 6:00 this morning, and i never got back to sleep… so i got up around 8:30 and headed off to school with my girl, she had to go to work before school so she dropped me off and i waited for the shuttle… saw one, but it was the wrong one, going the other way, too far away to catch, then another one, and another… still waiting for mine… 40 minutes later, as my class was starting, i called my girl and had her take me to school. stupid shuttle.

so now that i’m finally warm again, i’m chillin. ;)

but school’s lookin good, the iPod kicks ass, and i have a girl that loves me enough to leave work just to take me too school.

well, i was checkin my grades for the past semester and just about shit myself…

i was takin a PDE’s class that was rather difficult, and the teacher kinda sucked, so i quit going about halfway through the semester. i was going to drop it, but i had debated whether or not i should drop it too long and missed the deadline to drop the class, and i figured i was going to need to take it again anyway… so why bother going anymore, ya know? so i quit going.

I GOT A B IN THE CLASS!! holy shit!

i only took one test out of three, turned in two homeworks out of about 20, and never took the final. got a B.
i’m not really complaining, but dang, that’s messed up.

anywho… the other classes…

i got an A in complex variables, which is dope, because i was kinda worried about that one.
i got an A in computational physics, which isn’t surprising, but coolio nonetheless.
i got an A in undergrad seminar, but that wasn’t hard, all i had to do was show up, but that class was dope as hell, i loved it. it was basically a class where you go and listen to professors talk about their current (or past) experiments and studies that they are working on. pretty interesting stuff.
the other classes (optics and the lab that goes with it) don’t have the grades up yet, so i’ll keep you posted.

just thought i’d share that interesting turn of events with you.

plur, l8s

EDIT: I got A’s in all of my other classes, for a grand total GPA of aboout 3.85

i took my optics final yesterday, it was okay. it was a lot harder than i thought it was going to be. usually the professor gives out these really easy tests with 3 problems and a 4th problem as a graduate student problem or extra credit for the undergrads. it usually harder than the other questions, but this time it was the easiest question on the test, with the first question takin up like 45 min of the 2 hrs allotted for the test. i feel like i did okay though, it wasn’t too bad, but then again, it hasn’t been graded yet…

i took my complex variables test this morning, it was a lot easier than i thought it was going to be. i’ve been pretty much slackin this whole semester in that class, but my test scores have been improving. the good part about it is that he figures the grade for the final, then figures the grades for the tests and adds them to the grade for the final, and whichever is better, with or without the tests, is the final grade for the class. so basically, my whole grade rests on this one test, and i already know i got a few wrong, so…

i have one more final to take today, but i’m not worried about it. although i know it’s going to take me pretty much the whole 2 hrs to do it, just because most of the assignments and lab exercises have been very work intensive. but it’s because of that that i feel pretty confident going into the test…

we’ll see…

plur(it’s like plus, just not spelled the same) l8s

EDIT: well… i took the last test of my first semester at the U. man that was a hard test, not to brag, but i was the first one done, and it took me the full two hours to do it. it was tough, as i thought it would be, but i never thought it would be that tough. oh well, time to go have some liquor or something…
